About

Welcome to Sligo Scenes.

County Sligo is one of Ireland’s best kept secrets. Although relatively small in size, the county contains some of Ireland’s most unique natural landscapes in its mountains, lakes and coastlines.  As well as the beautiful scenery, Sligo has many places of interest, some famous, others lesser known.

I once had a conversation with a couple of Italian students that were studying in I.T. Sligo about Queen Maeve’s cairn on Knocknarea. I inadvertently told them that Queen Maeve was not really buried there, to which they were a little puzzled. I explained that the cairn was built around 5,000 years ago and that Maeve was supposed to have existed 3,000 years later. I sensed they were a little disappointed and confused by this and not wanting to completely dishearten them I suggested that maybe she could have been buried inside the tomb after all. It was not unknown for some passage tombs to be reused right up to Iron Age times and as the cairn was never excavated no one can say for sure!

I told them a lot of other places around Sligo had stories associated with them and asked them would this be something they would possibly be interested in hearing more about. They said they would like to know more about these places.

That conversation is where the idea for this website originated. Over time I hope there will be a wide collection of images and stories associated with them on the website for people to enjoy.

I will try to update the site regularly with images and a blog. As well as places of interest, I will include landscape and other interesting scenes from around the county. I am by no means a professional photographer and I don’t intend for the site to be a showcase of high quality photography but I do hope the images on the site make interesting viewing.

Any feedback is greatly welcomed so please feel free to comment on the posts or drop a line by emailing info@sligoscenes.com.

Enjoy.

Gordon
